Published: 25/07/2023

This year, 3 Counties Connected Community Rail Partnership is celebrating the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Chester to Shrewsbury rail line with a railway themed free family event on Wednesday 9th August at Chirk Parish Hall from 11 am – 3.30 pm. The event is a Victorian Open Day and promises lots of fun for all the family this summer holidays.

The Chester to Shrewsbury line officially opened on 1 August 1848, with the construction of Chester Station. The opening was met with great acclaim due to the wide range of destinations that could be reached for the first time. The line passes through the train stations at Chester, Wrexham, Ruabon, Chirk, Oswestry and Shrewsbury.

Visitors to the Open Day can experience the delights of the Victorian era, with ‘The Amazeology Show’, Victorian dressing up activities, children’s workshops, history displays, Victorian photo booth, the chance to meet famous Victorian Railway Engineer Thomas Brassey and much more.

Refreshments will be available on the day, with all donations received donated to the Chirk Community Food Cupboard.
