Celebrating the success of the Wrexham Station Art Project: A Lasting Legacy
Published: 26/01/2025
The Wrexham Station Art Project has become a shining example of how community art can transform public spaces, foster connections, and celebrate local identity. Its impact continues to resonate, with the project being shortlisted for the prestigious Community Rail Awards 2025 – a recognition of its outstanding contribution to community engagement to promote positivity, connection and inclusion. Moreover, its influence extends beyond Wrexham, inspiring the creation and design of a similar initiative, the ‘Memories of Flint’ Community Art Project.
The Wrexham Station Art Project: A Journey of Community Connection
Launched by the us, 3 Counties Connected Community Rail Partnership, the Wrexham Station Art Project aimed to bring a sense of place to Wrexham General railway station that captures Wrexham’s history, culture, and personal memories. Through a series of workshops, led by artist Sophia Leadill, local participants from The Wallich and Housing Justice, explored the Welsh concept of “Cynefin” (a deep sense of place and belonging), while addressing the emotional impact of rail-related suicides on the community.
Drawings of Wrexham landmarks and memories has transformed the railway station’s waiting room into a vibrant community gallery. This project demonstrated how art could turn a functional public space into a welcoming and meaningful environment for travellers and locals alike.
Its recognition as a finalist in the 2025 Community Rail Awards highlights the project’s lasting impact, acknowledging its innovative approach to community engagement and public space revitalisation.
Inspiring the ‘Memories of Flint’ Community Art Project
The success of the Wrexham Station Art Project has paved the way for similar endeavours. The ‘Memories of Flint’ Community Art Project, launched in 2024, drew heavily from the Wrexham project’s model of community collaboration and artistic display.
Focused on individuals living with dementia, the Flint project involved participants in creating art inspired by local landmarks and personal memories. These works were displayed in the waiting room of Flint railway station, mirroring the transformative approach first implemented in Wrexham.
Key Elements of Influence Included
Station as Gallery: Both projects utilised waiting rooms as accessible, informal exhibition spaces, making art a part of everyday life and travel.
Community Participation: Inspired by Wrexham’s emphasis on inclusivity, the Flint project engaged individuals with unique perspectives and stories, ensuring the artwork reflected the community’s authentic voice.
Focus on Identity: Just as Wrexham’s project celebrated the idea of “Cynefin,” the Flint initiative explored personal and shared histories, fostering a connection between the artwork and its viewers.
Recognition and Legacy
The Community Rail Awards 2025 nomination for the Wrexham Station Art Project is a testament to its transformative power. By redefining how art can be integrated into public spaces, the project has set a benchmark for future initiatives. Its influence on the Memories of Flint Community Art Project further highlights its role as an initiator in community art and community rail partnerships.
Both projects highlight the unique ability of public art to bridge gaps, celebrate heritage, and create welcoming environments. As the Wrexham initiative gains national recognition, we look forward to its legacy of community connection and creativity inspiring similar efforts across community rail network.
