Nantwich Railway Station Transformed by Local Art Project

Published: 19/07/2024

Nantwich railway station has undergone a vibrant makeover, thanks to a unique collaboration between the 3 Counties Connected Community Rail Partnership, pupils from Nantwich Academy Primary School, local artist Cathy Williams, and dedicated railway station volunteers. This creative initiative invites passengers traveling through Nantwich to experience the unique charm of the town through newly installed artwork prominently displayed in the platform waiting shelters.

The official unveiling of the artwork took place on July 15th, marking the culmination of weeks of artistic collaboration. Josie Rayworth, the Community Rail Officer, expressed her delight at the project’s success:

“Working on this project has been a privilege. We had such a warm welcome from the Nantwich Academy Primary School. The Transport for Wales volunteers were so generous with their time and hard work delivering this project. The enthusiasm and creativity are there to see in the waiting Shelters on both platforms, the results are stunning!”

The artwork, inspired by the distinctive character of Nantwich, was created under the guidance of local artist Cathy Williams. The pupils of Nantwich Academy Primary School contributed their creativity and ideas, making the project a true community effort. Additionally, the Transport for Wales volunteers, who already care for the station, played a crucial role in the project’s delivery.

Melanie Lawton, Transport for Wales Community Rail Strategy Lead, said:

“For Transport for Wales, it’s important that our stations feel like part of the community, and it has been wonderful to see the collaboration between Cathy, the pupils and our volunteers to really capture Nantwich and create a sense of place and ownership for the communities it serves.”

The unveiling ceremony featured the Mayor of Nantwich, who gave a recount of his days as a child attending the school which made the occasion even more heartfelt and special. Following the ceremony, the project was showcased in the Civic Hall, allowing the community to appreciate the creative efforts and the resulting transformation of the station.

The 3 Counties Connected Community Rail Partnership, committed to enhancing railway stations and promoting community engagement, is proud to have facilitated this project. The Nantwich Station Art Project stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and creativity.
